There are plenty of influential studio recordings you must listen to when dipping into jazz. Go ahead, put those records on and let them broaden your musical horizons. But if you really want to get a grasp on the genre, listening to live albums will give you a different kind of insight and enjoyment.

Dec 14,  · I was late to jazz loving, very late. I mean, I loved my dad's swing records, etc. but I mean (what we now call) "modern jazz". In when I was in school my friend was in the marching band and the jazz band (they did a killer version of "25 or 6 To 4" with my buddy on Guitar).

Jazz-rock may refer to the loudest, wildest, most electrified fusion bands from the jazz camp, but most often it describes performers coming from the rock side of the equation. Jazz-rock first emerged during the late '60s as an attempt to fuse the visceral power of rock with the musical complexity and improvisational fireworks of jazz.
